Making A Name In Womens Basketball at the NCAA Level
Oregon Duck's star Katie Fiso continues her rise at the college level
In Seattle basketball circles, the name Katie Fiso has long carried weight. Now the former Garfield High School standout is bringing that same competitive fire to the college game with the Oregon Ducks women’s basketball, continuing a journey that began in the gyms of Seattle and grew into one of the most decorated prep careers in Washington state history.
Standing 5-foot-11 and playing guard, Fiso arrived at Oregon as one of the most highly regarded recruits in the country. A four-star prospect ranked among the nation’s top players in her class, she was widely viewed as the top high school player in Washington before beginning her collegiate career in Eugene.
A Garfield legend
Before stepping onto the court for Oregon, Fiso built an extraordinary legacy at Garfield. The Seattle native helped lead the Bulldogs to multiple WIAA Class 3A state championships, including a dramatic title win in 2024 where she scored 29 points and hit two clutch three-pointers late to secure a 62–59 victory over Mead.
Her senior season was dominant. Fiso averaged about 24 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists per game, guiding Garfield to a 21–3 record and another state title while shooting roughly 60 percent from the field.
The accolades followed quickly. She was named Washington’s Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of the Year and also earned MaxPreps state player of the year honors, cementing her reputation as one of the best players the state has produced.
Garfield’s championship run during Fiso’s tenure was historic. The Bulldogs captured multiple consecutive state titles with Fiso at the center of everything — a dynamic scorer, playmaker and vocal leader who thrived in high-pressure moments.
Taking the next step at Oregon
After graduating from Garfield, Fiso headed south to Eugene to join Oregon head coach Kelly Graves. Graves praised the Seattle guard’s maturity and leadership, calling her a natural winner capable of running Oregon’s system from the point guard position.
As a freshman during the 2024-25 season, Fiso appeared in 25 games and averaged just over 3 points per game, showing flashes of the skillset that made her a prep star. She recorded multiple double-digit scoring performances and continued adjusting to the speed and physicality of the college game.
For Oregon, Fiso represents both the present and the future — a talented young guard learning the college level while carrying the pedigree of a championship winner.
A Seattle legacy continues
Basketball runs deep in the Fiso family, with multiple siblings having played at the collegiate level. But Katie carved out her own identity in Seattle’s storied high school basketball scene, becoming one of the most accomplished players to wear a Garfield jersey.
Now, as she develops with the Ducks, Fiso remains a symbol of the pipeline between Seattle’s rich basketball culture and the national college stage.
For fans back home — from the Central District gyms to the packed stands at Garfield — the next chapter of Katie Fiso’s career is still being written. But one thing is already clear: the same clutch scorer who delivered championships in Tacoma is now chasing bigger moments in Eugene.
