Before 2002, there had not been an official state sanctioned hockey championship for high school girls in Vermont. Despite the green mountain state serving as a cornerstone for hockey country in the northeast, it would take a team from a storied local school to overcome numerous obstacles on and off the ice to inevitably change the landscape of sports and for future generations of female athletes.
The story of Luc Gates, a gifted high school athlete whose legacy grew exponentially after his passing. After completing Home of Raleigh, a film about another young athlete’s brief but impactful life, filmmaker Michael LaRocque continues to explore how small-town legacies transcend loss.
The Home of Raleigh traces the roots of Seattle Mariners’ Gold & Platinum Glove winning catcher Cal Raleigh back to his father Todd’s hometown of Swanton, Vermont. The film tells the story of the Raleigh family, who have faced incredible loss, worked hard, and seen astronomical success. The film was directed by Michael LaRocque.
